When does the January 2025 transfer window open?

The 2024/25 season isn’t even halfway through yet, but there will be a number of clubs across Europe already fantasizing about big winter spending.

During the summer there was a great deal of activity around the world transfer window, with billions spent in Europe’s top five leagues alone. Premier League clubs spent £2.1 billion on themselves, but it’s highly unlikely there will be that much cash splashed around at the start of the new year.

January transfer windows tend to be quieter, especially for Europe’s top teams, but it offers struggling teams the chance to strengthen their squads or cover injuries. There will be a lot of teams already desperate for the winter market to open.

Here are all the details about the January 2025 transfer window.

There is no specific date when the January transfer window opens worldwide. Different leagues open and close their shutters at different times.

The Premier League’s winter window opens on Wednesday, January 1. The market will also open on New Year’s Day in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, as well as the Saudi Pro League.

However, in La Liga and Serie A, clubs will have to wait until Thursday 2 January to do business.

The January transfer window is open for about a month and closes in early February across much of Europe.

The Premier League’s winter window closes on Monday 3 February at 23:00 GMT, with Italy, France, Germany and the Spanish top divisions closing their windows on the same date, although the times will vary.

The Saudi Pro League window closes earlier than the major European leagues, to the relief of many European clubs, and will close on Thursday 30 January.

It promises to be an intriguing winter window for Liverpool supporters, who fear for the future with the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold expiring next summer. All three will be free to agree contracts with clubs outside England this January if they decide to leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign.

In another place of Premier Leaguesignificant movements are likely. Eberechi Eze, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anthony Gordon and Bryan Mbeumo could attract interest from the division’s top teams, while Manchester City could be looking for a replacement for Rodri given his absence for the rest of the season.

Victor Osimhen is another one to watch. The Napoli striker made a surprise move to Galatasaray on loan at the end of the summer window, but could make a permanent move in the winter. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain will be among his suitors.
