Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods? They are 530 meters apart.
Vijay Singh and Qass Singh? They are next to each other.
Bernhard Langer and Jason Langer? They are 540 yards apart – although Jason, the non-professional, is playing from a longer distance than Bernhard, the two-time Masters winner.
The reasons for the discrepancies – or in the Singhs’ case, the similarity? This is because of the event they are playing in this week, PNC Championshipthe (mostly) friendly pro-relative scrimmage event that closes out the golf year. On the non-professional side, you have sons, grandsons, a daughter and a father, while among the professionals, the ages vary, from 44 (Trevor Immelman) to 88 (Gary Player) – so to keep things straight, four sets of tees are in play.
For seven of the teams (Teams Cink, Duval, Immelman, Kuchar, Leonard, Harrington and Woods), the professional — and only the professional — plays from the maximum of the course (7,106 yards). Five of the best (Singh, John Daly, Steve Stricker, Nelly Korda AND Couples Fred), meanwhile, play from the second set of tees (6,576 yards), and that’s where the pros and cons start to overlap – also playing from this distance is 17 under.
The third set of tees (6,036 yards) sees six professionals (Langer, Nick Faldo, Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara, Nick Price AND Annika Sorenstam), and all but Sorenstam are playing from a shorter distance than their relative. (Sorenstam and son Will McGee are playing at the same distance.) Is it a little funky? Maybe. But again, it’s a family event; an invitation to Masters is not online. The final tee box (5,484 yards), meanwhile, is reserved for the course’s two oldest professionals – Gary Player (88 years old) and Lee Trevino (84).
Do participants monitor tee box qualifications? You bet – especially when the pros get bigger and closer.
“It is already a demanding week. Everyone wants to play” Padraig Harrington said on Saturday. “There are disappointed guys. I know from my perspective, my two sons are trying to split up when they’re going to play, who’s going to play. They’re both really looking forward to when I get to 55 because I go up a tee box.”
Below is the complete breakdown of tee-box and ardage.
