Are you still fidgeting with your golf grip, trying to get the perfect pressure and position? Sometimes a simple tip is all it takes to find the right golf grip and feel more confident standing on the ball. While it’s important not to overdo your grip, investing the time to master the proper golf grip will be well worth it.

Use a training glove for practice

Take an old club that you no longer use and put a training grip on it. Use it when you practice at home or throw it in your bag when you go to the range for practice.

Some players put a training grip on a weighted club and use it during their warm-up before each round. The attachment of the training handle ensures that your hands are constantly in the correct position. Even if you play golf every day of the week, a quick reminder of where your hands should be placed is quite helpful.

Test the clamping pressure

Light grip pressure is not always as effective as it seems. Too loose a club grip can make it difficult to control the club face at impact. To find the right amount of grip pressure, you need to experiment.

Grab a 7 or 8 iron that you feel confident with and head to the driving range. Start by hitting a few punches with what feels like maximum grip pressure. Then, hit a few strokes with very light grip pressure. Adjust gradually, working your way up from the light grip until you find a balance—enough pressure to control the clubface without creating unnecessary tension in your hands.

Avoid excessive contact between the club and the palms

Try to hold the golf club with your fingers. Not the palms. Too much pressure on the palms reduces control and makes it more difficult to release the wrists through the stroke.

To spin the club properly in your swing, take the club out of your palms.

Check the extension of your hands

Make sure the “V” shapes formed by your thumbs and forefingers point toward your trailing shoulder. It’s a simple checkpoint that works to help you find a neutral position. If you’ve been struggling with a piece, you may find that the V’s are directed more toward your lead shoulder.

Use grip pressure points

Once you have your hands on the club, you may also want to think about which fingers will feel the pressure. Use a little extra pressure on the last three fingers of your lead hand.

In the trail hand (right hand for the right-handed player), the middle two fingers of the right hand will do most of the work. The thumb and index finger are more relaxed. Some players also feel a little more pressure overall on the forehand versus trail hand.

Grips have become stronger

The same golf grip that professionals today usage is a bit different than what we saw in the past. While the neutral grip was always considered standard and the V-shapes formed by the hands were directed from the right ear, the modern golfer has a little more strength in the grip.

The arms rotate further to the right, towards the shoulder of the trail.

These slightly stronger grips allow for slightly more head speed and reduced shear. If you’re still gripping your club the way you learned years ago, it might be time to add some strength (rotation to the right) to see if that helps you gain control in your game.

Check your glove wear

Look for wear patterns on your glove. If you keep the same glove in the game for a few months, it will wear out, but if you notice that the palm of the glove is getting worse, you may need to adjust your hand placement so that the stick is more in your fingers.

This is not about saving the glove. It’s about making sure your hands are in the right place.

When working on your glove, make small adjustments. If you plan to adjust the position of your toes, rotate them a little one way or another. Make grip adjustments to the range of motion and note any changes in distance or accuracy. Going through a major control change is a lot of work that can mess up your game for a while, but the end result will be worth it.
