Starting with the upcoming MotoGP shakedown test (scheduled for Seppang, Malaysia from January 31 – February 2), Fernandez will begin his new testing career riding the YZR-M1.
In the year He will participate in official IRTA tests and private Yamaha tests, as well as various wild card events, with the aim of helping Yamaha engineers with their MotoGP bike development program in 2025.

I am delighted to confirm that Augusto Fernandez has officially joined Yamaha as a Yamaha factory MotoGP test rider for the 2025 season. Bike development is a priority for Yamaha as we try to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.
We signed Augusto to be our second Yamaha test rider alongside Cal Crutchlow. Cal was unfortunately unable to complete all of his testing tasks in 2024 and it became clear that we would need to hire a second rider to help us complete all the necessary tasks for 2025.
We believe Augusto will be a great fit for the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP test team and the YZR-M1 bike. Augusto is young and fast, and will be able to test with Cal and learn the unique technique required of a full-time challenger.
Our current level of performance allows us to fully utilize the maximum limits for the test program. In addition to the tests, we have the idea of participating in up to six wild card rides, and Augusto will also be a substitute rider between the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team riders or the Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP riders. They will not be able to compete anytime in 2025. Plenty of driving opportunities should allow Augusto to maintain his competitive pace while taking on heavy testing duties.
Augusto has started working with us and his first real test participation will be at the Shakedown test at Sepang in late January 2025.
In the meantime, we’re keeping a close eye on Cal’s progress from his arm injury this year, and hope he can return to testing action as soon as possible.
