Here, we’ll take a look at some of the big winners and losers, as well as early candidates for the coveted first pick in next year’s draft. The Athletics and White Sox were not eligible for a t10 pick, explaining why they finished so low despite poor performances in the 2024 season.
The Seattle Mariners were the biggest lottery winners going into the event, with the 15th overall pick coming off another remarkably mediocre season, giving the Mariners 1) a high draft pick and 2) a significantly increased bonus. With a pool that will be available for use during the draft, this will allow the club to acquire more talent after the draft the farm system already features a significant amount of talent, and the lottery rewards from this draft should only help them strengthen the system.
The Cardinals entered the event with the 13th overall pick and left with the 5th pick, a turn of events that will surely leave the organization pleased with the results. As mentioned with the Mariners, the Cardinals will have additional funds available to use in their draft with a pick in the bonus pool that should free them up to acquire some talented prep players later in the draft.
Despite going into the lottery with (tied for) the best odds in the first pick, the bounce of the lottery ball left them with the 7th pick in 2025. This continues to add to the long list of unfortunate events that have plagued them are to the organization in recent memory. Their farm system is currently around the league average, and while they will be able to step it up a bit this draft, they won’t be able to do so as dramatically as first overall. at the pick.Couple with losing the bonus money they would get and it was a terrible, not good, very bad day for Miami.
The Rockies also tied for the best odds at the first pick, and while they didn’t slide as far down the ladder as the Marlins, they still ended up with the No. 4 pick names like Charlie Condon and Chase Dolander.Fortunately for them, this draft class is shaping up to be pretty deep at the top, though I’m sure I’m sure they would more than welcome the added bonus pool they would get with the first pick.
Matt’s son and Jackson’s brother, Ethan is the next Holliday ready to break into the league. Ranked as the top prospect on many boards in early 2025, Ethan has an intense physical frame that is significantly bigger than Jackson’s at his age use some legitimate raw power, although I have some minor concerns about the percussion. In the field, Ethan will hold his own with a smooth action and solid arm side.Even if he moves to third, the bat should more than compensate for the loss of defensive value.
Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M
On the college side, LaViollete has some really intriguing skills from the left side and an impressive physical frame. Coming off of an impressive season headlined by 29 home runs, he’s poised to be another force in the SEC can hardly pass him.
Arnold has one of the most unique pitching characteristics at the college level. He comes from a low, lateral position that has proven to be a near miss during his college career. Both his fastball and slider are rated well above average makes strides every year. If he goes like Paul Skeens throughout the season, Mike Rizzo has proven he’s not afraid to select pitchers with the first pick. as he did with Stephen Strasburg, though his injury-riddled career might be enough to give him pause. Regardless, Arnold is my top player in this year’s draft and has a real chance to be the first pick this summer.
