Forum Member Review: PXG 0311 Gen 7 Irons

entry

Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) isn’t afraid to make a bold and daring statement or two and they stuck to the script in the new launch 0311 Gen 7 iron family. PXG calls the Gen 7 “the most advanced technology and performance irons in PXG history.” Touting maximum COR up to the USGA limit, new QuantumCOR and Titanium Bezel technologies, and the thinnest face in golf, PXG aims to deliver a golfer’s or superior player’s distance iron.

PXG put three sets of 0311 Gen 7 P irons into the hands of MyGolfSpy Forum testers. From the fairway to the fairway, these golfers put PXG’s claims to the test. Read on to see if the Gen 7 line lives up to its billing.

Main points

  • Aesthetics: PXG eschewed the industrial-looking screws of previous generations in favor of a simpler, cleaner look, and testers loved it.
  • Feedback during the course: Our testers hit more greens in regulation and achieved lower scores with the 0311 Gen 7 compared to their golf clubs.
  • Performance: Testers gained distance and enjoyed improved forgiveness compared to their player groups. Every tester was particularly impressed with the 0311 Gen 7’s ability to keep distance on off-center shots.
  • Likes: There’s a lot to like, but testers were particularly impressed with the high-end fit and customer service.
  • Dislikes: A tester noticed many signs and nicknames consistent with the bags’ chatter during testing.

aesthetic

Previous generations of PXG the irons were easily distinguished from other brands by the use of industrial-looking screws on the back of the club head. ABOUT Generation 7that look is gone. In its place is a clean milled finish with a titanium weight gate. Our testers were big fans of the updated and refined look.

“…when the Gen 7 bars were released, they immediately caught my eye with the new look. Removed multiple weight gates and color changeable bottom plates to mix/match iron. Personally, I’m a big fan of the new look and people tend to notice and ask about them when I play. PXG also did a great job with the feel of these irons. Like most good forged heads, you get a buttery smooth feel, but you also feel the snap from the face,” – Josh Parker

“PXG made some really nice irons with these. If you’re a fan of weighted screws and miss the more industrial look, to each their own. To me, these are the sharpest irons they have ever built and one of the best looking clubs on the market today.” – GolfSpy AFG

Feedback during the course

After an unforgettable fitting experience (more on that in a bit), our testers were eager to get 0311 Gen 7 P’s out on the course. During the testing period, these golfers hit more greens and scored lower and, in some cases, lowered their handicaps as a result.

“This distance hold was a huge contributor to some of the best iron play I’ve had in a long time. Now, unfortunately, I’ve suffered a lot off the tee and on the green this summer, and so my handicap has actually regressed a stroke. I was able to match my season low two rounds ago, and in that 75 I was able to hit 12 of 18 greens, well north of my historical rating of 35%. I still missed a few greens, but there is no doubt that these PXG irons, on their own, have significantly improved my iron game.” – GolfSpy AFG

“Since putting the Gen 7 irons in the bag, my dispersion has become less and less, my shots are hit higher without losing distance, and I am still able to work the ball both ways…. I think my winner made the right decisions and I really believe I have a chance to break 70 before the end of the year with these irons.” – Josh Parker

“These clubs have seriously impressed me and improved my game immediately; I started this test with a 13.3 handicap and finished it with an 11.9. From the relevant experience to the benefits on the course, these checked almost every box I could have thought of and certainly a few I didn’t. The amount of faith I have in these clubs borders on delusion and that’s something I’ve never experienced.” – Coulter

performance

Testers hit their shots farther with tighter distribution across the group. In particular, every tester was thoroughly impressed with 0311 Gen 7’s the ability to keep distance in mistakes. On the other hand, our testers reported feeling extremely confident as their time with the new irons continued.

“What I’m most impressed with this setup is the height I’m getting out of my irons. As someone who has a very steep angle of attack, height has always been an issue and between my fitter, these irons and the fittings they came with, I’m almost double the height….I’m seeing the same distance as my Srixons , but the accuracy and forgiveness come with them every day and I would venture to say, there aren’t many clubs out there that offer more….One of the biggest things I’ve seen with these versus my other clubs is in off center attacks. Let’s face it, we all make those shots and with these irons, distance loss is minimal…” – Josh Parker

“Throughout the set I’m going about 5 feet farther than my other set of irons. This wasn’t really something I was hoping to get with these irons, but it’s definitely impressive…. Apologies: This is an area that if we could rate it would be a 12 out of 10! To be clear, I’m referring to keeping a distance in mistakes. You step up to the ball, take the draw and know you’ve just hit the ball on your toe and the brand new Maxfli Tour X is in the water. Then, somehow, you land on the front of the green vault… This has happened to me a few times and I can’t say enough how impressed I was by this. Through testing with my launch monitor, I only found a loss of 5-8 yards in the meat. How’s that for forgiveness?” – Coulter

consents

Much like ours PXG Black Ops testers, of Generation 7 The team of testers was thoroughly impressed with the customer service, quality fit and overall experience with PXG. Each of our testers was contacted by the fitter prior to their appointment and received a complete and extremely in-depth fit. After this fitting, PXG sent each tester continuous updates until the clubs arrived at their door and followed up weeks later to ensure the testers were satisfied with the fit and performance of the club. According to our testers, the experience was top notch from start to finish.

“First things first, fit! I truly believe that PXG has one of the best rigs around. From the initial contact to having the clubs in play, my best fit experience has been top notch. The performance and forgiveness are unreal and the ability they offer the player to hit off-center makes these clubs super playable.” – Josh Parker

“PXG’s marketing sometimes comes across as over the top, but I have to say that in my experience they deliver. PXG Clubs are premium and backed by a convenient premium experience and premium customer service from start to finish. I have never had an OEM contact me asking how my assembly went. PXG did.” – GolfSpy AFG

He doesn’t like it

There’s clearly a lot to like about it PXG 0311 Gen 7 line of irons. Needless to say, our testers rated them highly across the board. However, one tester commented on the accumulation of bag noise in the sole and rear of his irons.

“…the mark and topline are more ‘smooth’ and the back is more ground. I bring this up because I dropped a point there. Milled finishes tend to show faster wear and for someone who plays 3-5 times a week on a bumpy, rough track, you may see the bags rattle after 30-40 rounds. Nothing performance-stopping and probably not something many need to worry about, but it was important to keep in mind. I’m also not one of those people who will ever use iron covers and don’t mind battle scars as long as the clubface stays clean and free of wear. I haven’t had those problems…” – Josh Parker

CONCLUSION

True to form, PXG debuted 0311 Gen 7 Formation with considerable fanfare. When our testers were equipped and took the clubs to the course, they saw significant performance gains in terms of distance and exceptional forgiveness, as well as exceptional distance retention at the fault. If the experience of our testers is any indication, the 0311 Gen 7 line of irons can live up to the claims and should be seriously considered for making your bag.
