Hello, friends, and welcome to a Gulf Coast edition of The Rogers Report! I am currently in Grant Thornton Invitation at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, the second stop on my personal Florida Swing. I started my week at GOLF’s 100 best teachers Summit at Cabot Citrus Farms, where I met (and sought advice from) the best golf instructors on the planet. Then I made the three and a half hour drive to Naples to attend the second (and my first) iteration of the Grant Thornton Invitational.
The prime season may be over for many people, but please allow me to explain why the next two weeks are some of the best in golf. But before we get to that, some personal news: The The TGL broadcast team was notified on Thursday mornings, and I’ll be serving as the digital host for the league! I’m very excited about it, and of course, you’ll get the full rundown right here in the Rogers Report in January.
Back-to-back Grant Thornton Invitational-PNC championships: the most underrated weeks in golf?
I know, I know, it’s the “off season.” The CME Tour Championship and the Tour Championship are behind us. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore golf. This week, LPGA and PGA Tour pros are teaming up at Grant Thornton, which means we’re getting one tone with good content, like when Disney Channel had those crossover episodes when we were kids. As much as I enjoy watching PGA Tour events and LPGA Tour events on their own, there is something special about the players coming together for a week. It’s definitely a competitive atmosphere in Tiburon, but a lot of it relies on bonding and having fun.
Professionals’ personalities will emerge in ways we’re not usually used to over the next few weeks. Team events tend to bring these out, and Grant Thornton is no exception. Same with the PNC Championship. Professionals may be at work, but in a “bring your child to work” kind of way. It’s more about shared experience than anything else. So be sure to keep an eye on social media over the next 10 days because I have a feeling we’re going to be getting some hilarious, wholesome and fun content from both Grant Thornton and PNC. (Remember, the Tiger “big dog” meme originated at PNC.)
This last note only applies to those attending the Grant Thornton and/or PNC Championship, but I’ve learned that there are few things I enjoy more than being on a Ritz-Carlton golf course, especially around the holidays. There are endless places to explore, and you can’t beat the food or clubbing.
Kuch and Kang’s hilarious quiz
Remember when I said we were going to get some great crossover content this week at Grant Thornton? Megan Khang and Matt Kuchar kicked things off with an incredible back-and-forth, as the 27-year-old Khang asked her 46-year-old teammate about some Gen-Z slang. Do yourself a favor and watch this hilarious video.
Kuchar delivered; he’s the best dad in this video, excitedly belting out every line despite getting it spectacularly wrong. I’m actually impressed that while Kuchar went zero for six here, he was able to come up with an answer for each term. Kuch, it might be time to ask your boys for some Gen-Z lingo lessons. I am sure they will be more than happy to help you.
A healthy press conference
My favorite part of Thursday at the Grant Thornton Invitational was Lydia Ko and Jason Day’s press conference. It’s clear the reigning champions are desperate to bounce back, but it’s even more clear that day and Ko respect and admire each other.
Some excerpts from the transcript:
Day: I have heard many – actually, many stories about how she is one of the best people on the LPGA and I definitely think a lot of people know that by now. Pure class on and off the golf course.
It is: I remember Jessica Korda was like you’re playing with Jason, right? She was like you’re playing with the most beautiful person in the world, you’re going to play to be the best team.
It is: When I played in the tournament championship a few weeks ago, I was like, man, it would be great if I had a partner like Jason, it would just make my life so much easier.
Day: I am a massive fan of Lydia and her game. Even more so as a person, she is extraordinary.
It is: I’ve actually said this to a lot of people, out of all the players I’ve played with, Jason’s game, whether it was putting the ball, driver, iron, wedge, and overall was the best player I’ve ever seen.
Folks, find a golf partner who will mesmerize you like Jason Day and Lydia Ko advertise. Even if you don’t have a fraction of the talent they have.
