Fans and promoters say Devin Haney needs to get busy with his career and stop sitting on the sidelines and regroup after his loss last April. He lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia in an upset on April 20 in Brooklyn. That defeat seems to have taken something out of the former two-division world champion.
A year on the sidelines
Bill Haney said this week that he has “Big news” for Devin’s next fight soon, but he didn’t give any hints as to who it might be or what weight class. If Devin moves up to 147, he could fight for a world title against WBC champion Mario Barrios or WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis.
IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is interested in fighting those guys, but he’s been too slow to make the fights happen. Bill will move quickly to make them happen if that’s where he wants Devin to go.
Promoter Eddie Hearn feels it is important for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) to get back into action, noting that he will be out of the ring for nearly a year when he returns.
That’s not a good thing for 26-year-old former two-division world champion Haney to do if he wants to stay sharp. Haney loses a lot of money staying out of the ring, and he could have already defended against Sandor Martin and fought IBF champion Liam Paro in a unification.
“He needs to move”
“Let’s see what Devin does next. For me, I think he needs to move. He fought in April. It’s now December. He is not going to fight in January. He’s going to be out for almost a year by the time it’s all said and done,” said Eddie Hearn. iFL TV about Devin Haney being inactive since his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20th. “I would like to see Devin back in the ring. I think he is a tremendous talent.”
