How Antony almost replaces Mohamed Salah at Liverpool


A report has revealed how Antony was considered by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah ahead of his latest contract extension.

Salah entered the final year of his contract in the summer of 2022 and there was significant uncertainty over his future after months of awkward negotiations, only for a deal to finally be agreed with the club.

As revealed The TimesKlopp became so concerned at the prospect of losing Salah two years ago that he began looking for potential replacements, with the former boss eyeing Antony.

At the time, Antony was one of the most intriguing young wingers in the world. He had dazzled at Ajax under the previous one Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag, who made it clear he wanted to reunite with the Brazilian at Old Trafford.

United’s negotiations over Antony were lengthy and often frustrating for all involved, however, although there was certainly plenty of time to Liverpool To join the race for his signature, the Anfield outfit ultimately did not need to, as Salah signed his current contract and ended speculation.

Antony eventually secured his move to United that summer for a whopping £82million, a fee that has been rewarded with 12 goals and five assists in 87 games. Salah, by comparison, has registered 65 goals and 40 assists since the start of the 2022/23 season.

Antony has been heavily linked with a move away from United these days, while Salah is at it again blocked in contract negotiations as he approaches the final six months of his current deal.
