WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis Vs. Lamont Roach is now moved to March 1st on PBC Prime Video pay-per-view.
Box insider Keith Idec reports the new “targeted date” for the Tank-Roach clash is 3/1. Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) still wants the fight to take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, but there is a basketball game scheduled for that night. They will have to find another destination for this game, which keeps on being moved.
PBC will decide whether to find a venue in Texas or move it to where it makes sense on the East Coast in Baltimore or Washington, D.C. The fan base for Tank Davis and Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) is in that area located. with this regional level battle.
Possible Reasons for Tank-Roach Move
- No fan interest in the fight: People don’t want to see Tank cherry pick another opponent after doing it for a solid 11 years. Fans want to see 50-50 fights involving Tank, and they haven’t seen him in a pick match during his career.
- Need for a strong supporting cast: It takes time to find a solid enough undercard to make fans overlook the lackluster main event between Tank and the light-hitting Roach.
- Additional time required to promote: Choosing the little-known Roach means it will take more time to promote to get fans interested enough to pay $75.99 to pre-order the card Prime Video PPV. Roach is not a good interview, and neither is Tank Davis. Neither of these guys possess charisma, which will make it nearly impossible to generate enough interest to get fans to order it. Ideally, PBC should cancel the whole idea of this fight and start over by picking someone who can possibly beat Tank.
Fans don’t want to see this fight because Roach has NEVER beaten any high level opposition, is a poor puncher and campaigns at 130, where he is considered a paper champion.
The Tank Davis vs. Lamont Roach fight was originally scheduled for December 14, but was moved to January. Now, it is tentatively scheduled for February 1st. What a mess!
No interest in this fight
This is not a fight the rest of the United States is interested in paying to watch on PPV. They want to see tank fighting quality fighters that are at least a 40% chance of winning, not a weak puncher with just a 1% shot to upset Tank.
Jamel Herring beat the 29-year-old Roach in 2019, and he has no wins over talented opposition. Roach captured his WBA super featherweight belt last year, beating former Tank knockout victim Hector Garcia via a 12-round split decision on November 25, 2023.
The David Benavidez vs. David Morrell light heavyweight fight will NOT be placed on the undercard of the Tank-Roach card. It makes sense because it’s way too big of a fight to be put on the undercard of that albatross.
