TCS NY City Marathon
1999— Kenya’s Joseph Chebet followed up his victory at the Boston Marathon in April by winning the New York men’s race in 2:09:14. 2:th The Portuguese was Domingos Castro (2:09:20). Mexico’s Adriana Fernandez (2:25:06) won the women’s race, with Catherine Ndereba of Kenya (2:27:34) completing the 2 distance.th. Ndereba would eventually become one of the most successful marathoners in history, winning world titles in 2003 and 2007 and Olympic silver medals in 2004 and 2008.

2004– World record holder Paula Radcliffe (2:23:10) beat Kenya’s Suzanne Chepkemei (2:23:13) by three seconds in the women’s race in the closest women’s finish in the race’s history. The two were side by side until Radcliffe pulled away in the final 200 meters. “It was a good way to end the year,” said Radcliffe, who was eliminated from the Olympic marathon in Athens, entering the race as the favourite.
Hendrik Ramaala (2:09:28) became the first South African winner since Willie Mtolo in 1992; American Meb Keflezighi (2:09:53) was second, just 10 weeks after winning silver at the Athens Olympics. Like Radcliffe, Ramaala was also excluded from the Olympic marathon.

2010— Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat (2:28:20) won the women’s race over two would-be winners making their debut at the distance: American Shalane Flanagan (2:28:40) and Kenya’s Mary Keitany (2:29:01). who would become a 4-time winner in New York. 4:th Former Providence star Kim Smith (2:29:28) was from New Zealand.
The winner of the men’s race on his debut at the distance was Gebre Gebremariam (2:08:14), who followed the advice of Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, who told him that he now had to win the race after he (Geb) dropped out. 15 miles with a knee injury. 5:00th current champion was Meb Keflezighi (2:11:38), and 6th Brazil’s Marilson Gomez dos Santos was the 2006 and 2008 New York winner.

2021— It was a Kenyan sweep of the New York City Marathon (50th edition) is back on the city streets after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Peres Jepchirshir (2:22:39), Olympic gold winner in Tokyo in August, edged out fellow Kenyan Viola Cheptoo Lagat (2:22:44) on her debut at the distance, and Ethiopia’s Abel Yeshane (2:22:52) when they entered Central Park and became 1St The Olympic champion will win in New York. All 3 cracked New York’s all-time top 10 list (see below). Completion 4th Tokyo’s bronze medalist was Molly Seidel, who ran 2:24:42, the fastest time ever by an American woman.
Cheptoo, who ran as Viola Lagat at Central Arizona and Florida State during her collegiate career, is the younger sister of Bernard Lagat, who was part of the ESPN2 broadcast team for the event. The two shared an emotional hug after the race with Lagat still in the television booth. (Her full name is Viola Cheptoo Lagat).
Albert Korir (2:08:22), running alone over the last few miles, edged Morocco’s Mohamed El Arabi (2:09:06) in the men’s race. 4:th was Elkanah Kibet (2:11:15), a member of the US Army World Class Athlete Program. Kenenisa Bekele, 39, making her New York Marathon debut, finished 6thth at 2:12:52.
As there were still some precautions due to Covid, the field was much smaller than usual and only 25,000 runners took to the start line (in 2019 there were over 54,000 starters).
