India’s out-of-favour Shreyas Iyer silenced critics with a double century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match between Mumbai and Odisha. Shreyas Iyer hit his second consecutive century and third First-Class double hundred in the tournament on Thursday, November 7.
Shreyas hit 190 deliveries for 142 runs in the match against Maharashtra. But the right-handed batsman missed the next match against Tripura. The middle-order batsman played the Mumbai XI for the First-Class match against Odisha at the BKC Ground in Mumbai.
Shreyas Iyer made two hundreds ahead of Sarhad Gavaskar trophy
Shreyas Iyer came in to bat at number five for Mumbai after skipper Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed prematurely for a golden duck. Iyer and Siddhesh Lad guided Mumbai to 385 at stumps on the opening day, with both knocks hitting centuries. Iyer was unbeaten on 152 runs at the end of Day 1.
On Thursday, Shreyas made his knock his third first-class double century. The batsman reached the milestone with 201 balls including 22 boundaries and eight sixes. Notably, this was his first double century after scoring an unbeaten 202 against Australia in the 2017-18 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer Increases Test Recall Chances
Shreyas Iyer’s career-best knock in the Ranji Trophy has boosted his chances of a Test recall. After recovering from a shoulder operation, Iyer is in stronger form and is ready to return to the Test team. It should be noted that the Indian Test team has been struggling with consistency in the middle order during the recent series.
Iyer last played for India in the Test series against England earlier this year. He was dropped from the squad and lost his central contract. Iyer is not part of India’s Test squad from February 2024. His last ODI appearance came in a series defeat to Sri Lanka and his last T20I appearance was in 2023.
I really want to come back – Shreyas Iyer
The 29-year-old is focused on continuing his strong performances and staying in peak physical condition to secure his place in the Indian team again. He stressed his commitment to control what he can and to deliver consistent performances.
“I’m very eager to get back, but (I’d like to try) control the controlled. My job is to perform and participate as much as possible and to see that my body is in the best shape possible.,” Iyer said while talking to Indian Express earlier this month.
Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 season. But KKR released him before the mega auction. Iyer will now be part of the IPL 2024 mega auction scheduled to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24-25.
