The incredible start to the 2024/25 campaign continued for Liverpool on Tuesday night as Arne Slot’s side hammered Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield to stay perfect in the Champions League d this season.
The German champions were expected to provide the Reds with a major test, however, Liverpool rallied the Bundesliga outfit in the second half courtesy of a hat trick from Luis Díaz and a goal from Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch striker’s goal played a pivotal role in the win as it gave the Premier League club a two-goal cushion and also kept the momentum on their side.
After the crash, former Liverpool star and pundit Neil Mellor he saw that this goal would not have happened had it not been for some incredible refereeing by Dutch official Danny Makkelie.
The linesman called for offside against Bayer Leverkusen but noticed that Liverpool were starting a counter-attack, Makkelie allowed Slot’s men to continue playing, which resulted in the Reds working the ball up the pitch to score.
It was a key moment of the game and this officiating point deserves to be applauded as fans don’t usually give referees the respect they deserve when they make brilliant calls like this.

Liverpool continue to shine under Arne Slot
Liverpool’s win last night took them to the top of the Champions League table as the Merseyside club have won all four of their games in the competition.
This is on top of the Reds sitting top of the Premier League, which is further than any of the club’s supporters would have expected following the departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.
Slot’s start at Anfield is the best by any manager in the club’s history and given the struggles of Man City, Arsenal and Real Madrid so far this season, Liverpool can’t be ruled out to win the bigs trophies, despite being the Dutch coach’s first season. .
