1953– Emil Zatopek set world records in the 6 miles (28:08.4) and 10,000 meters (29:01.6) in Stara Boleslav, Czech Republic.

1956 (1-2)– Before leaving for their long trip to Australia for the Melbourne Olympics, Team USA put on a show for fans in the Los Angeles area. Competing at the Coliseum 1, Perry O’Brien posted his best ever shot put streak, topped by two world records of 62-8 (19.10m) and 63-2 (19.25m). In the 5,000 meters, Bill Dellinger (14:16.2) edged Max Truex (14:16.7), both breaking Truex’s 2-week American record of 14:22.8. The next day at Occidental, Hal Connolly won the hammer throw with a throw of 224-10 1/2 (68.54m), setting the first of his six world records in the event. O’Brien and Connolly went on to win Olympic gold in Melbourne.

TCS New York City Marathon

1987– Great Britain’s Priscilla Welch, a 42-year-old ex-smoker who started running in her 30s, won the women’s title at the New York City Marathon in 2:30:17. In the men’s division, Long Islander Pat Petersen, who competed locally for Manhattan College, led at the 10K and halfway mark. The eventual winner, Ibrahim Hussain (2:11:01) of Kenya passed Petersen on First Avenue and raced unerringly to the tape; Petersen finished fourth in 2:12:03, one spot behind Pete Pfitzinger (2:11:54).

In one of those unfortunate moments of live television, ABC missed Hussain as he crossed the finish line.

1992— Fred LeBow, in remission from brain cancer, ran his first New York City five-county marathon. With 9-time women’s winner Grete Weitz by her side every step of the way, Lebow finished on a tear in 5:32:34.

Willy Mtolo, freed from the lifting of international sanctions against South African athletes, won the men’s race with a time of 2:09:09. Lisa Ondieki set a new women’s record with a winning time of 2:24:40 to finish 40th, the highest by a woman since 1976.

1998– Nine men were still in contention at 22 miles, and three were fighting for top honors to the finish. John Kagwe (2:08:45) finally cruised to his second consecutive victory, followed by fellow Kenyan Joseph Chebet (2:08:48) and Tanzania’s Zebedayo Bayo (2:08:51). Mexico’s German Silva, winner in 1994 and 1995, finished 4thth at 2:10:24.

Franca Fiacconi was the women’s winner in an Italian record time of 2:25:17 after holding off Mexico’s Adriana Fernandez (2).th/2:26:33) and Kenya’s Tegla Loroupe (3th-2:30:28) back at the 20 mile mark.

2009– Meb Keflezighi, 34, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist, beat a strong field to win the New York City Marathon in a personal best time of 2:09:15. Keflezighi became the first American to win the race since Alberto Salazar finished first in 1982. Other Americans to finish in the top 10 in the race, which also served as the US championships, were Ryan Hall (4th-2:10:36, Jorge). Torres (7th-2:13:00/debut), 8. Nick Arciniaga (2:13:46), 9. Abdi Abdirahman (2:14:00), 10. Jason Lemkuehle (2:14:39) :

As Keflezighi neared the finish line in Central Park, he made the sign of the cross when he reached the point where his friend Ryan Shay collapsed and died while running in the 2008 US Olympic Marathon Trials held in the fall of 2007.

The victory marked a triumphant return for Keflezighi, who was written off by many after he finished 8th in the trials race. Showing he still has a lot to give, he’ll finish 4thth 2012 London Olympics winning the 2014 Boston Marathon and his 3rdth The Olympic team in 2016 (33th in the Rio Marathon).
Meb who finished 11thth In the 2017 New York City Marathon, her 26th and the final competitive distance race, the Abebe Bikila Award was awarded 3 days before the race. The award has been presented by the New York Road Runners since 1978 to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of distance running. He received another accolade in 2019 when he was inducted into the NY Road Runners Hall of Fame.

Derartu Tulu (2:28:52), a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000 meters (1992, 2000), beat Russian Lyudmila Petrova (2:29:00) in the women’s division in the final round. who finished second for the 2nd year in a row. Great Britain’s Paula Radcliffe (2:29:27), the defending champion, finished 4th, remaining among the leaders with less than 5 miles to go.

2015— Kenya’s Mary Keitany (2:24:25) was the 2nd women’s winner.th year in a row. He would win again the next year and get his 4th win in 2018

In the men’s race, Kenya went 1-2 with Stanley Biwott (2:10:34) and Geoffrey Kamworor (2:10:48). 3:th It was Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa, winner of the Boston Marathon earlier in the year.

Running in New York for 10th time, 40-year-old Meb Keflezighi, a winner here on the same date in 2009 (see above), finished 7th in 2:13:32, setting a Masters record for the event.
