The gear changes keep coming for Adam Scott. after shaking the bars at the FedEx St. Louis Championship. Jude, the former Masters champion made another adjustment leading into the BMW Championship. Only this was not a surprise.

Scott’s gear mix has remained fluid for most of the season, which makes sense considering he’s a agent without equipment. If the device doesn’t work, Scott has zero obligation to keep it in the bag. When Scott traveled to Scotland for the Genesis Scottish Open, he reintroduced a Miura AS-1 blade set designed with his direct feedback.

“The pitch conditions in Scotland are very different to here,” Scott said last week, “so using the irons works best.”

Miura’s AS-1 has more offset than many modern blades—a design requirement that came directly from Scott.

Through Scott’s testing, he found that the wider sole and lower inflation on the AS-1 was a good fit for the tighter binding style conditions. However, once he returned to the United States to begin the FedEx Cup playoffs, the different grass and turf conditions led Scott to use an iron compound featuring Srixon’s ZX MK II utility iron and Miura’s CB-302 (4-5) and KM-700 (6-9).

When things didn’t go the way he hoped in Memphis—Scott finished T18—the mixed setup took the hit in favor of the AS-1 blades. The change paid immediate dividends as Scott posted a 63 during the second round of the BMW championship to build a five-shot lead.

For most of the golfing population, choosing blades over the back of the cavity doesn’t make much sense. Beyond improved workability, two of the most important metrics (off-center forgiveness and ball speed) take a hit as the golfer tries to find the center of a significantly smaller clubface.

Good thing Scott is one of the most accomplished ball strikers on the planet and rarely misses. Asked about his decision to move away from hollow irons and back to blades, the Australian said it came down to the familiarity and confidence he has with the AS-1.

“I’ve basically been using a blade my whole life, but I’ve enjoyed watching this new generation, a lot of them playing with cavities and maybe it’s the future,” Scott admitted. “It seems more forgiving. I think it’s more forgiving. But it’s just not what I’m used to. I thought it was worth going. I didn’t play bad when I did that. There was some good stuff in there too. But I think when it comes down to it, under the most pressure, I feel more comfortable with that kind of blade. I’ll use it as long as I can.”

Scott’s AS-1 is a throwback to the blades he grew up playing in Australia with significantly more offset than many modern blade offerings. The other feature he wanted to incorporate was a unique one-piece design to handle the various terrains he deals with during a tour season.

“Ultimately, I think the biggest change in irons from where I was, I was looking for a different sole design,” Scott said. “Something to perform a little bit better on all types of terrain, because week after week we play different types of terrain, and I was looking for something that could perform on every different type of terrain, and we certainly got that.”

Scott’s Miura AS-1 irons can be custom ordered via Fairway Jockey for $3750 (8 piece set).
