Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach is being moved to a new date in January from the original December 14th scheduled day. There is no official confirmation from PBC, but Tank Davis disclosed the information to Dan Rafael.
Tank posted a cryptic, sad-face emoji on his X site, suggesting he has some bad news for his fans. In fact, Baltimore native Tank Davis’ followers would consider it a positive if he canceled the fight against Roach entirely or moved it to the David Benavidez vs. David Morrell card move.
“The fight will not take place this year. Davis wrote ‘January I hear’ for when the fight would take place,” said Dan Rafael on his Fight Freaks Unite website.

Possible reasons for the new move:
- Lack of interest in Tank-Roach Fight: Given the massive backlash from fans over the little-known super featherweight Roach being picked, the fight could go poorly on Prime Video PPV. The promoters for this event would risk putting a fight that few people want to see on December 14th without a solid co-feature to help with the PPV buys.
- The need to pack the fight with a bigger one: To the Davis vs. Moving Roach fight to a bigger fight, like Benavidez-Morell, will help draw more interest. If put on the Benavidez card, fans will overlook the tank fight as dull. It will be more tolerated because the focus will be on the more convincing matchup between Morrell and Benavidez.
- Additional time to market fight: By moving the contest a month later, in January, the promoters will give more time to market it and try to generate fan interest with interviews and social media posts.
The fans’ lack of interest in the fight between Davis and Roach makes it necessary to move it if not to cancel it. It would be risky for any promoter to put a low-appeal fight in a big venue like the Toyota Center in Houston and have it on PPV. This is a recipe for disaster in terms of financial loss.
Tank Davis’ promoters need to realize that he needs to be matched better in the future as fans have grown tired of the lackluster opposition he has fought in his 11 year career. WBA lightweight champion Davis has lacked compelling fights too much in recent years and has taken notice.
Interfering with a soft job like Roach would be overlooked by people if Gervonta was facing killers, but not when every opponent is an easy win. This is the main issue. Every opponent Tank fights has a slim chance of winning, where he is always the favorite, and there is no sense of uncertainty.
Seeing Tank lined up with gimmes like Rolly Romero, Frank Martin, Ryan Garcia and Isaac Cruz tells people that his career is just a rush to make money without providing value.
