Rublev’s self-sabotage, self-mutilation takes center stage in the disturbing loss of Paris

Andrey Rublev has often talked about getting temper under control. And when he does he sounds sincere. Remember, it was only nine months ago that the Russian exploded onto the field and was disqualified for physically threatening an official in the Dubai semi-finals.

Afterwards, a contrite Rublev vowed to get his volatile temper under control.

“It’s unacceptable to yell or scream at someone – it doesn’t matter who,” Rublev said. “If it’s a liner or just a spectator, it’s unacceptable and I’m very sorry. It doesn’t matter if the guy is right or wrong, it’s unacceptable and I’m nobody and nobody to do those things. I certainly learned a lesson and I certainly learned from it.”

However, Rublev’s struggles have continued.

At Roland-Garros he melted into despair during a shock loss to Italy’s Matteo Arnald.

“Totally disappointed with myself the way I behaved, the way I performed,” a dejected Rublev said at the time, “And I don’t remember behaving worse in a slam ever. The problem is the head, because today I basically kill myself”.

Rublev had more trouble at Wimbledon, where he again took out his frustration on the knee. He then laughed, saying at least he hasn’t damaged the hallowed lawns of the All England Club.

World No. 7 Rublev didn’t shout at an official in Paris today, but his disgusting behavior, which included tortured screams at spectators, a smashed water bottle during a tirade on his chair and self-harm with his racket ( that drew blood from his knee) is once again raising concerns in the tennis community.

“This has gone from tennis meme to source of serious concern,” journalist Jon Wertheim tweeted, echoing the sentiments of many who took to Twitter to share the now-viral videos of Rublev’s behavior during 7-6(6) 7 -6(5) thereof. defeat by Francisco Cerundolo.
