George Wheeler tops the UK five-mile rankings

Wolverton 5 at 23:04 Wheeler tops the 2024 lists as Claire Elms’ record-breaking exploits continue in our latest round of road racing.

WOLVERTON 5, Buckinghamshire, October 26

While George Wheeler won the overall in a more than serviceable 23:04, W60 Claire Elms posted a British and likely World Masters best time of 30:44.

On his debut over the distance, Wheeler’s time comfortably took the 26-year-old, who ran 28:26.80 over 10,000 meters over the summer, to the top of the UK five-mile rankings for the year. Harry Brodie was almost a minute behind, his 24:00 just a few seconds off his best.

The winner of the women’s section, New Zealand’s Martina Conner, recently recovered from a four-year injury to run under 17 minutes in two 5km runs. Here the 22-year-old narrowly edged out Bedford’s Rebecca Murray as both ran personal bests led by Connery’s 27:35.

Elms was the seventh woman home and her 30:44 was six seconds better than Kate Wright’s previously unverified British masters best time and could be the world’s best W60 time, but official marks are not kept. A listed 8km time of 31:28 shows Elms’ time to be the best ever recorded over five miles.
