High jumper and pole vaulter won top prizes at European Athletics Championships in Skopje
Jaroslava Mahuchych and Mondo Duplantis were announced by European Athletics as their Athletes of the Year for 2024 on Saturday (October 26).
Both athletes won European and Olympic titles and set world records this year. They are both winners of the continental governing body’s Rising Stars Awards.
Duplantis, who cleared the pole vault world record to 6.26m this summer, has joined fellow Olympic and European champions Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Miltiadis Tentoglu, while Mahucich, who improved the high jump world record to 2.10m, has been included in 2022 and 2023 together with the Europe of the 19th century. the best athlete of the year Femke Ball and the European and Olympic 800m champion Keeley Hodgkinson.
Mahuchich, who was crowned the Women’s Rising Star in 2019, received the European Athlete of the Year award from European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov.
European Athletics also named Serbia’s javelin silver medalist Adriana Vilagos and Olympic 1500m sixth-placed Nils Laros of the Netherlands, who set a European under-20 record of 3:29.54 in that final, as this year’s rising stars.
A special Team Spirit award was won by the Italian team, which topped the medal table at the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships with 11 gold medals. The award was received by Antonella Palmisano and Leonardo Fabbri, 20km and shooting champions respectively, and presented by Christian Milz, CEO of European Athletics.
