New Zealand stunned India in their first two Test matches
New Zealand enter the Test series against India on the back of a humiliating series defeat against Sri Lanka. India were the clear favorites for the Test series, but the underdogs stunned Rohit Sharma & Co. and overcame the fort.
Notably, India had a dominant 18-match winning streak in Tests at home and the Kiwis ended it with their first Test series win in India. Additionally, India lost a Test series at home in over a decade as they lost the previous home series against England in 2012-13.
Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir came under fire after the loss and was heavily criticized by fans and pundits. India suffered 4 defeats in Test cricket at home under Rohit Sharma, the second most for an Indian captain.
I don’t want to do any postmortem – Rohit Sharma
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Indian National Cricket Team captain Rohit highlighted India’s dominant run on home soil and added that he will not look too closely at the recent defeat at the hands of the Kiwis.
“It’s been like that in the last two test matches, we’ve won 18 consecutive series at home, which means we’ve done a lot of things right. We have performed exceptionally well over the past few years. So I won’t go into too much depth, and we’ve gotten very confused.
“I think for 2-3 innings we had a poor performance with the bat, but that’s what happens when you perform consistently for so long, you lose,” Rohit said at the post-match press conference.
Rohit Sharma added that he will not do a postmortem of the team as he has no doubts about the potential of the players in the squad.
“I don’t want to doubt anyone’s potential. These guys helped us stay undefeated at home for a long time and that’s why I don’t want to do anything after death. But we can see what we can do to get out of such situations and the batsmen should come out with confidence in their plan. The New Zealand batting also showed that if you put the bowlers under pressure, everything will go in your favor.”
I thought it was a pitch where not much was happening – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was also asked if the New Zealand batsmen were allowed to post a few more runs on the board in the first innings (259). In response, the Indian skipper said that they managed to restrict the Black Caps to a decent score and it was only the failure of the Indian batsmen that cost them the match.
“Look, to be honest, they were 200 for three when they started and it was great for us to come back and restrict them to 259. I thought it was a pitch where not much was happening, we just didn’t. If we’d been closer to the first innings, things would have been different. but New Zealand played better.”
Rohit Sharma also sent a message to his teammates to be ready to perform better in the final Test match at the famous Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He said:
“We want to show up at the Wankhede and win this Test. We’re not thinking too far ahead. It’s important that we focus on our next game and what we can do better as a unit because it’s a collective failure.”
