Developing distance control from the green bunkers may seem complicated, but with this simple tip from Devan Bonebrake, a Top 100 GOLF Teacher to Watch, you can improve your yards and do more up and down the sandy lies.
As Bonebrake explains in the video below, if you want better distance control from the bunker, all you have to do is fix yours temponot the length of your swing.
“One of the biggest mistakes I see in the bunker when players try to change distances is that they take too short a backswing,” says Bonebrake.
While it sounds good in theory, a shorter return often causes players to rush their putt and leave their shot short, or even in the bunker.
Instead, keep your bunker swing the same length and adjust your speed to match the distance you want the ball to go. Need to get away for a bit? Swing slower. Want to lower the ball further? Add some speed.
“We don’t have to change much,” Bonebrake says, “And having a longer swing, having a swing with more length, will also help it (the ball) get in the air more.”
You will now be able to swing confidently from the sand and with a little practice, land your shots in the bunker close enough to putt on par.
