New Zealand Cricket has named the Black Caps ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Mitchell Santner appointed temporary captain. A limited overs match is scheduled to be held in Dambulla and Pallekele from November 9 to 19.
Mitchell Santner’s leadership and early challenges
Santner will lead the Black Caps on the tour of Sri Lanka, while the permanent ODI and T20I captains will be decided later this year during the New Zealand summer. This upcoming white-ball series will be crucial as they look to build depth in their squad leading up to the ICC Champions Trophy in February 2025 and the ODI World Cup in 2027.
Among the interesting additions Nathan Smith and Mitchell Hayboth receive their first call-ups after impressive domestic performances. Smith was recently named the NZC Male Domestic Player of the Year, while Hay has shown promise in New Zealand A matches.

Bowling attack
Lockie Ferguson will lead the pace attack supported by Smith, Jacob Duffy and Josh Clarkson. Santner will participate in the spin department, Michael Bracewell and Job SodhiSodhi was the most experienced T20I player in the squad.
Eight players from the ongoing Test series against India – Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Tom Blundell, Will O’Rourke, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Southee and Kane Williamson – Was not considered for selection to prepare for the upcoming Test series against England.
