When you have a high golf swing, bad things tend to happen. The most common? Slicing the ball and leaving yourself with another difficult shot – which usually piles up in shots and adds to your scorecard.
While there are many remedies to help eliminate this type of swing defect, GOLF Top 100 Teachers Michael Hunt shares an easy workout that can lead to better contact with the ball almost instantly. In fact, all you have to do is pick up a club and practice from almost anywhere, allowing you to get the feel you need to translate it onto the course.
See how it works below and then try it yourself.
A simple tip to fix your high golf swing
When you struggle with a high golf swing, that means yours Clubface is out of planeleading to contact with the ball that is either on the heel or toe of the club. Your angle of attack is also thrown away, which is why you can hit a thin or thick shot, or why the ball may have too much side spin to have a chance to stay in the game.
But Hunt says the hack above is a good way to improve on this common mistake.
“This is for you golfers who struggle to grab the club on the way down, or get into your club path,” says Hunt.
He then walks through the drill.
“Take your left hand at the wrist (as you would normally do for a right-handed golfer) and use an open face with your right hand,” he adds. “Then practice swinging the club, trying to get the palm (of your right hand) at a 45-degree angle. Then just let the club drop to that spot, getting the feel of your weight moving toward the target and the club drop.”
Next, Hunt describes a common mistake he sees from golfers coming up, with the golfer often swinging the club too much.
“I see a lot of golfers use that right hand and set the club, which increases it,” he adds. “Or they use their shoulders and really throw that club out, causing their right hand to rotate — which adds loft and leads to all kinds of bad things.”
It’s a simple practice drill to try before hitting a ball, so use Hunt’s tips as you practice before your next session or round of golf – should help you feel more comfortable and lead to fewer golf swings.
