Padraig Harrington said he believed he could win A Open championship.
As for this week, anyway?
“I would say it’s like many times entering it: I wish they were a few more weeks,” Harrington said Wednesday. “But you know, I have to play with what I have tomorrow. I have to create a reality in my head I can win.”
As it turned out, what he had was not enough. Popular Irishman fired the four-ons 75 and five-top 76 rounds in Royal And lost the cut, placed in one and eight shots.

Startling because: You would think one of the nine talented would see the weekend. But Ethan Fang, Cameron Adam, Justin Hastings, Philip Jacuboik, Frazer Jones, Richard Teder, Connor Graham, Sebastian Cave and Bryan Newman are all done after 36 holes.
8. Padraig Harrington
What shot: 75-76
Startling because: Irishman was a favorite crowd. He won the open championship in 2007 and 2008. He just won the US Senior Open. But eight bogeys, a double bogey and a triple trunk were too much to overcome.
7. Adam Scott
What shot: 72-79
Startling because: He was in the final group last month at US Open. But he made more double bogey (3) than birds (1) on Friday.
6. Patrick reed
What shot: 77-70
Startling because: He won the Dallas Liv Golf event last month and was trying to make a push for the Ryder Cup team. But he only made a bird on Thursday.
5. Patrick Cantlay
What shot: 73-72
Startling because: He too is trying to make Ryder Cup team. But he ended up the 13th in the field in the winning strokes: setting.
4. Joaquin Niemann
What shot: 70-74
Startling because: He has won four times this season in Liv Golf. And he was looking good after a first 70 round. But he opened with a double noise on Friday and ended with a 74.
3. Cameron Smith
What shot: 72-78
Startling because: He won the 2022 open championship in St. Andrews. But he made six bogeys and a double Bogey on Friday.
2. Collin Morikawa
What shot: 75-74
Startling because: He is ranked sixth in the world, and he won Open 2021. But he was ranked 147th in strokes won: approach this week.

Startling because: He has won five degrees. But he only made a bird on Friday.
