The modern golf trip can be many things, but more often than not it is one thing: dear. It’s hard to squeeze the truth out there. The increased demand for meeting times has allowed resorts and courses to push prices higher than they ever imagined.
It’s a good problem to have – a customer base willing to spend – but one that makes an adventure near and dear to my heart – the Wisconsin golf trip – an expensive one. An excellent one, for the record, and worth it – but not cheap. Play all the hits in the Badger State and win around $300 per round.
But tucked away in Wisconsin’s sacred golf triangle is a can’t-miss Washington golf course—an hour southwest of The whistling straittwo hours southeast of Valley of sandand only 15 minutes north of Erin Hills. And at just $65 for a typical greens fee, it’s the perfect follower for the bucket list courses that surround it.
Need a day to travel from Erin Hills to Sand Valley? Start it in Washington County. Need to feel thrifty after spending $500+ on the whistle strait? Washington County will feel like a five. To some extent, this is exactly the variety that some of us are looking for. in they want to pay for our golf. in they want to sign up for some bucket lists. But we might also want to work some more affordable tracks into the itinerary to balance everything out. However, how does one choose those courses?
We understand that it starts with us list of the best courses you can play for $100 or lesswhich debuted last week. As a property, Washington County has a very similar tune to another course on that list: Shared GCout in Denver. It’s wide open, with fescue hills framing snaking roads. Like the soil at Commonground, this part of Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine can be hard and firm. The grass is green, but it will play like yellow, barring any Midwest summer storms. WCGC must feel bloated. Your tee shots will swivel. We like that.
Its neighbor to the south, Erin Hills, is the crown jewel of the area, but at times WCGC can feel like its municipal little brother. It can’t match the host of the 2017 US Open, but it’s not trying. If the Erin Hills is sharp and blasts out tunes like concert speakers in an arena, the WCGC is softer, like the portable speaker you use while cooking in the kitchen. Depending on the day, trip or time of year, the same song can seem different and still great at the same time.
