PGA Tour goes abroad. In the preparation of next week’s open championship in Royal Portrush in northern Ireland, Golf first makes a stop in North Berwick, Scotland, for the Scottish Open origin in the renaissance of the club.
Located in the neighboring country of the legendary open country, Muirfield, the Renaissance club has been around since 2008. This will be the seventh year that has played a hospitable in Scottish Open and the third year that is a co-concurrent event between PGA Tour and DP World Tour. The Renaissance club is not a classic design of connections, but it is certainly “links”. I like to classify it as a tribute to the Scottish Golf Links Golf, built by an American. The American one being a long -term golf architect Tom Doak, who is responsible for another American -type course, Pacific Dunes, part of the resort bandon Dunes in Oregon.
The golf course is longer than average, playing in a par 70 that measures nearly 7,300 yards. There are five par 3s, 10 par 4s and three par 5s. There is very little harsh to speak and the coastal location brings to the game the threat of immature weather. The greens are the shepherd of Fesca and, due to the threat of the weather, will run at a slower speed.
Many of the biggest names in the sport are here this week, including local Countryman and defense champion Robert Macintyre. As a combination event, the 75 main players from PGA Tour are on the field, as well as 75 best by the Tour World DP.
If the weather is completely kind for all four days, this can be turned into a bird race and/or by setting a competition, but we have seen this tour largely affected by the conditions of punishment. If and when it gets tough, the ball hit will be the key. I looked at strokeed by stroke: off the tee this week, as well as hits won: ball hit, car distance and strokes won: Afrim. I have also used birds of birds or better acquired, clashing, won strokes: setting (slow greens) and performance in par 4s that measure 450-500 yards.
DOAK conducted a wide redesign of the Memorial Park, where they play Houston Open. I used this course as a plot for the Renaissance Club, as well as Riviera Country Club (GENESIS Invitational), Augusta National (Masters), PGA National (Cognant Classic), Old Course in St. Andrews and the plantation course in Kapalua.
Justin Thomas (35-1)
Thomas has played in the event more than many of the best PGA Tour players after starting to come to the Renaissance club in 2019 when he finished ninth. He has won at PGA National, played very well over the years in Riviera and won in Kapalua. Mimi feels very generous for one of the best iron players in the world, scramblers and bird manufacturers. Often Thomas’s problem is being placed, but it is often in courses of the type of connections where we see by deciding neutralizing due to slower green speeds.
Sam Burns (37-1)
In its last eight beginnings, Burns has just finished once out of the first 20. Like Thomas, he makes many birds and is a great scrambler. It is one of the best placers in the field and during the last 24 rounds ranks No.1 in this field in the yard 450-500 par 4s.
Ryan Fox (60-1)
It was Fox who beat Burns on a play off last month at the RBC Canadian Open. Fox chose his first PGA Tour victory just a month before this in Myrtle Beach. He has 19 wins all over the world and joined the DP Tour World in 2017. He has so much if no more links to golf experience than most players in the field. During the last 24 rounds, it ranks 11th in this field for SG: Access, 13th for SG: Ball Staring and is 12th in yard 450-500 par 4s. Fox ended the 12th here in 2023.
Victor Perez (125-1)
With Scottie Scheffler, Rory Mcilroy and Xander Schauffle all in this field, we are receiving some great awards for everyone else, including Perez, who ended up in 18th place in the Memorial Park at the beginning of this season. Perez has seven wins all over the world and three at the DP World Tournament, including the Alfred Dunhill Links championship in 2019. As Fox, it also has many links to the current Golf and good form. Perez ranks seventh in this field for SG: Access and 14th for SG: Ball Strking during the last 24 rounds.
Jordan Smith (125-1)
The Englishman is one of the longest hit in this field. During the last 24 rounds, he ranks seventh in this field for SG: off the tee. He is the 21st for the SG: Ball Staring and is the 17th in 4s long. He has twice finished the race in his last seven beginnings of the DP. It ended the 12th here in 2023, shooting four rounds in the 1960s.
Kristoffer Reitan (175-1)
Reitan has a win, two racing conclusions and a fourth place finish on his last seven DP tournament. He is far from tee and is one of the best placers in this field. This will be his open Scottish debut, but with his current form and price, I had to take a Norwegian Longhot flyer.
