As you may have collected from the round of Thursday’s opening to We openOakmont is not golf struck and wrong. It is also not open to the public. But the surrounding region is fertile terrain for less sadistic courses in which anyone can use.
Here are six points to play for pleasure in the Pittsburgh area while the field in Oakmont It endures four days of pain.
Nemacolin
Pittsburgh is the site of steel, but the late Joseph Hardy built his wealth on wood, and 84 lumber is the fraud he founded. With wealth from that business he continued to create a fantastic retreat, refined along the western achievements of the Appalachian Mountains, approximately 90 minutes from the Pittsburgh Airport. Outside of course attracts a wild animal park, a museum of aviation and vintage cars, a monster wagon and a collection of art worthy of museum, boasting warhols and the like. For players, the draw lies in two patterns of pete colors. First, Mytic Rock, a former PGA Tour’s 88 Lumber Classic, extends about 7,500 yards from the tips, so it can promote punishment if you want to play it. However, from the softer teas, it is much easier, with abundant seats and greens that make great entertainment, especially when cut with friendly pins. Sister Mystic Rock’s sister, Shepherd’s Rock, who painted collaboration with Tom Liddy, was the last course of the famous architect’s long career, and you have the meaning that he was entertained with her, from the mined bunkers he laid through the bases to Tilt-a-Whirl voices, he formed as targets. The high property points allow for sweet mountain spaces and the closing extension is clean candy for the eyes, captured by a waterfall supported 18.
Olde Stonewall Golf Club
True for his name, this Bukolik course, in the land rolling north of the city, is decorated by shock stone slabs, lining teas and alleys, water risks. From the strategic and aesthetic curves, they were left behind by architects Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, whose appearance cuts a Sylvan trail sitting sweetly in its wooden circle.
Totteridge Golf Course
The Appalachian Mountain trips are a long road from the Ocean, but the 18 holes here have the appearance of a water -free connection: rustic and open, with wide views and generous targets. Although the birds do not come easily, it is difficult to lose a ball.

Foxburg Golf Course
The roots of the game take place deeply in Foxburg, a charming nine-hole that is said to be the longest golf course that operates constantly in the United States. In accordance with that story, the club is the home of the American Golf of Fame, an impressive show of ancient clubs and other objects dating back to the 1800s. The course itself is a time capsule, as well, with fiery ground, small driving greens and concrete ponds in a box filled with sand and water. Grab a small piece of that sand, wash it with water – and presto – you have taken a tee diy yourself.
Buhl park
Like Henry C. Fowns, who founded Oakmont, Frank Buhl made a mint in the steel industry. Also like fowns, he left his mark on Golf. Not building a private club but funding a golf course in eternity. Thanks to that wealth, the nine-holes that bears the name of Buhl-a beautiful track, dressed in trees that is just as nice for a walk like everything-functioning as a public gift: no greens fees. Everyone is invited to play for free.
Bob O’Connor Golf Course
House in Tee Pittsburgh first and a teaching center called for Arnold Palmer, Bob O’Connor is the course of people-set within the city’s borders and embedded with an income atmosphere. Green tariffs maximum at $ 16, and a three -hole Palmer loop can be played for an hour.
