I’m not a marketer or a gearhead. Pro-shop memorabilia does nothing for me, and the newest club in my bag is three years old. On and off the course, I’ve noticed a pattern: I don’t like shopping, and the less stuff around me, the happier I am.
This does not mean that I have sworn off material possessions. I know their value, especially when I’m on the go. And with travel as my pace for GOLF, I’m on the go a lot—rushing through airports, getting into rental cars, hauling clubs to this course and that.
None of these are difficulties. But it can be a hassle if I don’t have the right stuff with me. There’s nothing like travel to clarify what you really need – and what you don’t. Reflecting on the past year, here are 5 items I wouldn’t want to do without.
KJUS Pro3L Rain Jacket
Plenty of outerwear will keep you dry, but too many make you look like you’re preparing for a moon landing or are as restrictive as a straight jacket. Pro3L does neither. It’s sleek, breathable, stretchy, and loaded with clever, almost sneaky performance touches—rain gutters on the wrists, a hidden waist cincher that cuts out the bulk when you’re shredding and putting on, and a sense of weight that disappears just as soon as you pull it on. Think Burberry meets Batman: the aesthetics of a haute couture house combined with Alfredo’s knack for futuristic gadgets. Dry never looked so good, or moved so well.
Golf Club Glove Travel Bag
This is not a new discovery. It’s more like an old friend. I’ve had my club grip for the better part of a decade, and it’s taken a beating on all six continents where golf is played. It still hasn’t torn or chipped, and its chain teeth remain in perfect shape. I wish it was the same for me. The bags are industrial-strength, with strong straps and reinforced nylon stitching, inline skate wheels that glide smoothly over airport floors, and pockets for shoes and sundries you don’t know you’ll need until you do. Three sizes cover every type of golf bag. They pack tightly around your clubs and fold neatly when empty. The list of Tour-pro users is long – DJ, JT, Rory, Brooks and others – but these guys fly private. This bag is a luxury the rest of us can afford, and one that will likely last us. Pro tip: don’t forget to buy the arm bar as a defense against snappy drivers. Airlines will replace lost clubs, but will not reimburse for damages.

Sun Bum Sun Cream
Breaking news: sunscreen is supposed to protect you from the sun. But on a golf trip, you want it to do more. You want something that lasts, doesn’t feel greasy, doesn’t leave you looking like a mimic, and doesn’t drip into your eyes on the back nine. Sun Bum checks all those boxes. It’s moisturizing, rubs on clean, and you can get it in a TSA-friendly 3-ounce tube, which is nice, since sunscreen only works if it’s not confiscated at security.
Buc-ee’s Hill Country Beef Jerky
Like Tiger, I can’t play when my muscles aren’t firing, and I’m even worse when my stomach is grumbling. So I always keep a snack in my bag. The problem is that many “energy bars” sold in health food stores are candy bars in health food packaging. However, impetuous – impetuous – is different. High in protein, easy to keep, slow to spoil and really tasty. Buc-ee’s Hill Country Beef Jerky it has become a place to go. It keeps me fueled, stable and ready to take at least one good swing before lunch. There are more than a dozen flavors, but the old school steakhouse version suits me best.
