5 essential keys to keeping your golf game sharp in the winter

Winters sure have improved since I was a kid growing up in Geneva, NY Back then, winter meant packing away my clubs for months at a time – except for my putter.

While I always recommend planning a winter golf trip to stay motivated, there are plenty of things you can do at home to keep your game sharp even during the colder months. Below I’ve outlined five ways to keep rust at bay during the winter.

1. Make practice a priority

Growing up in the snow belt meant winter gearing was all I had – and maybe that’s why gearing has always been a strength of mine.

Today’s exercise mats are much better than the ones I used as a kid. They allow you to check your setup, monitor your swing, make sure your ball spins end-to-end, and work on distance control down to approximately 12 feet.

Now that we live in Florida, the weather is not an issue – but we still carry one Perfect mat for placement around because it’s so useful.

2. Use a mat and net to keep your swing cool

If you have a garage or small indoor space, a rug and kick net make for an easy, practical setup year-round. The options are endless, and even a compact space is enough to work on hard contact and swing mechanics. We set up a net in our garage and connected it to a launch monitor to enable wedge distance control throughout the off-season.

3. Train your grip with a molded training glove

Your grip determines your clubface – and ultimately the launch direction of your ball. But grip changes can feel uncomfortable, which makes the offseason the ideal time to address them.

A molded training glove allows you to practice proper hand placement without the pressure of impact. even Scottie Scheffler is known for his constant control. You can also install a fitted grip on a dedicated practice club and try your swing. Improving your grip often leads to better wrist action – and better ball striking.

4. Check your posture and placement in a mirror

Winter is the perfect season to work on the basics. Correct posture is essential for sustained contact, but it is difficult to assess without feedback. By using a mirror, you can ensure that your arms hang naturally and your hands land directly under your shoulders at address. This simple visual checkpoint pays huge dividends.

5. Building speed

Everyone wants more distance, but swinging faster only gets you so far specific training. Winter is the ideal time to increase club speed and the Stack System is one of the best ways to do so. We’ve used it over and over and the over/under speed protocols really work – as long as you stick to the program. If more speed is your goal, it’s a worthwhile investment.
