The key to Arne Slot’s early success as Liverpool manager has been his ability to improve the players already at the club.
The Dutchman did not receive a war chest during his first transfer window on Merseyside but still made immediate improvements, with the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz developing remarkably on his watch.
However, not everyone has enjoyed their time under Slot. Liverpool’s stalwart left-back Andy Robertson has not only failed to improve since Jurgen Klopp’s departure, he has declined rapidly. The Scot, who is only 30 years old, has struggled to adapt this season, making individual mistakes at an alarming rate and generally putting in below-par performances.
With Kostas Tsimikas not pulling trees as his deputy, it is possible that Liverpool Explore the market on the left side in the next windows. Here are four they might target.
Who wouldn’t want to add Alphonso Davies to their list of defensive options? The Canadian international has long been one of the most impressive left-backs in European football, using his exceptional speed to provide excellent defensive and offensive support.
The list of suitors for the Bayern Munich man is long. Barcelona and, in particular, Real Madrid have been presented as potential destinations for the 24-year-old, whose contract expires next summer. Davies looks increasingly unlikely to renew with the Bavarians, meaning he will have his pick of Europe’s elite at the end of the current campaign.
It would be remiss if Liverpool did not assess Davies as a genuine candidate to bolster their left-back department, but any pursuit could prove inconsequential like Real Madrid’s. come to an agreement. It wouldn’t be the first time that the Spanish giants beat the Reds in the transfer market.
Unlike the situation with Davies, Liverpool have been for some time one of the main names linked with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson. The United States international, who was born in Milton Keynes and came through Everton’s academy, has won admirers across the division with his impressive attacking displays for the Cottagers.
Indeed, Robinson saved one of his best performances of the current campaign for Anfield. The left back was man of the match for ten players Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw with Fulham – a game in which Robertson was sent off by the Reds – and provided two assists while keeping Mohamed Salah relatively quiet.
Robinson has been a regular provider for Fulham this season with his lung bursts down the flank and accurate deliveries into the penalty area. He also has no defense whatsoever, with his tenacity key to disarming the best wingers in the league.
Rayan Ait-Nouri is another attack-minded left-back who has made waves over the past few seasons. The Wolverhampton Wanderers defender has been linked with the Premier League’s top dogs consistently following high caliber performances in a struggling side.
The 23-year-old, who has even featured on occasion as a winger, provided three goals and two assists in all competitions last season, a figure he has already improved on in 2024/25. The Old Gold defenseman ranks among the best in the division in his scoring position, assists, shots and successful dribbles.
The Algerian also has time on his side. At just 23 years old, unlike Robinson, who is 27, he has plenty of opportunity to improve in the coming years, working out any kinks and continuing to refine his offensive strengths.
Speaking of full-backs with a strong attacking instinct, Milos Kerkez is another of the division’s young whippersnappers. The Bournemouth left-back is just 21-years-old and has already racked up an impressive number of appearances for the Cherries since his 2023 move from AZ Alkmaar.
The Hungary international has adapted quickly to the Premier League despite his tender age and is one of the most exciting talents in Europe. Liverpool have been linked with Kerkez previously and it seems inevitable that one of the country’s great players will take Bournemouth’s left-back for the next 18 months.
Kerkez caught the eye in the Netherlands for his offensive performances and has started to provide goals and assists to match his effort this season. It hasn’t always been a clean sheet in a Bournemouth team, with the youngster not the most reliable defensive option. However, he too has time firmly on his side.
