Jj Spaun may be in New York City now (or in Connecticut!), But we are still thinking about Oakmont, the extraordinary end of Spaun and his first great title.
If you do not remember, Spaun, who was interrogating a year ago if he would continue in Pro Golf, began on Sunday connected for the second and one out of the direction held by Sam Burns. Spaun then made five Bogeys in his first six holes, and while it seemed easy to write it, he hanged around, played the last seven in three and drained a 65 pedestrian for Birdie in the 72nd hole to win from two.
But even though the tournament was set, The night did not end here. Here are four memorable moments that you may have lost the rest of the road.
The passage of the flag
Spaun won the US Open when he made his Zog at 18, posting one at the same time in front of Burns and Adam Scott, who were playing in pairing after him. Scott and Burns still technically needed to play the 18th, because this is what you do on golf tours, so Caddy Mark Carens I could not get the flag (such as Caddy Tradition). But someone had his back. As the spaun ended up in the note area, Carens went out of the room and found many people there to congratulate him, including former well-known Caddy.
As the Carens hung around the outdoors, up Jim Jim “Bones” Mackay, the tall caddy who retired to Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas. Now he is a reporter on the NBC course, and he spent Sunday walking with the last pairing. So when that group was over, Bones grabbed the pin and the flag, traversed it to score and handed it to Carens, who will keep it in a prominent place for the rest of his life.
Squad
Have you seen Spaun’s coaches, Adam Schriber and Josh Gregory, celebrate after victory? Few were more pumped than these people, and for a good reason.
Spaun has worked with Schriber for the past two years, while Gregory recently came as a short game coach. They were also both instrumental to restore spaun on track during the rain delay after his early fighting on Sunday. Spaun was five over eight holes and four burning back when the delay hit.
“They were the same, ‘dude, just cold. If you were to give you four shots again going to nine back on Monday, you would take it,” Spaun said. “They just said,” Just let it come to you, be quiet. Stop trying so hard. ”That’s what I was doing.
Spaun and Gregory have known each other for years and met several times to see the short Spaun game this year, but just started working completely together at US Open. Good time.
“For him to reach his best year of his career and say,” Hey, I need help, “it shows his character.” As, “I want to be elite,” says Gregory.
Spaun said Gregor’s ability to read stands fierce – and dictates how the ball would come out – it was a great help in Oakmont.
“The first hole of the tournament, I am dead, one -sided short at 10 in the rough, not far from the stake, but it was dead because it was on the wrong green side,” Spaun said. “I will not show the secret. But we try to make the secret, and I grabbed it. Small. ‘It was nice to see them realize so quickly. “
‘You did it!’
A few minutes after the Carens took his flag from Bones, he followed the spaun and a dozen others to score, around the corner and over the crossing the players and cadets in the 18th Green. At the top of the bridge, just above, where the spectators walk below, a friend of the Carens noticed him and, from about 30 yards away, began running towards him and shouted, “Mark, you did!” Carens stopped and raised both hands. He did it, indeed.
‘I lost it’
After presenting the trophy, the spaun began to walk on the remote green side – he had just noticed his father.
John and JJ hugged and John told his son that he was proud of him.
“As soon as he was walking towards me with that trophy, I just lost it,” John said. “Tears. I just couldn’t keep it inside.”
(You can read more about JJ and John and this moment here.))
It was not just a great day of his father for John Spaun, but also JJ. His wife and two girls should celebrate with her.
“It was a very touching moment to see my girls there,” he said. “My oldest daughter, she was in Valero when I won, and she was at the same age as my youngest daughter now. It was so good to have my family there on my father’s day. Just just extraordinary. I have no words to describe the moment and those who are able to see me as a winner.
“My daughter always asks me, whenever dad goes to golf, she’s like,” were you a winner today? “Sometimes I like it, yes, I was. So today she’s like, ‘You’re the winner today’. Like she saw it.
