Let’s face it. Golf can be expensive. Between the green fees, the golf balls (I know you lose them often) and the clubs, it can be hard to find room in budget for new clothes.
That’s why I compiled a list of my favorite money-saving hacks. Like you, I care about saving money. After years of being frugal, I’ve learned a thing or two (or four) that I’m ready to pass on.
1. Shop at discount stores
Don’t waste your time in big box retail chains. PGA TOUR Superstore and Golf Galaxy have the occasional deal on apparel, but where the real savings can be found are at stores like Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Sierra.
Some of my greatest finds have come from these types of stores. From $35 Melin hats to $30 G/PARA polos, you can find plenty of cool, discounted clothing if you’re willing to be patient and do a little hunting.
2. Use a browser extension
We live in a day and time where there is a technological solution to seemingly every problem. Enter the browser extension…. a tool you download through your favorite browser (usually Chrome) that is programmed to do certain things.
One of my favorite browser extensions for deal hunting is Honey. This tool automatically tries a series of coupon codes at checkout to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.
3. Buy off-season
One of the easiest ways to save money on golf apparel is to shop off-season. Buy shorts in the winter and buy your quarter zips and jackets in the summer. You’ll often find these things on clearance racks depending on the season and the retailer.
4. Don’t be afraid to save
Buying used golf apparel may sound weird or make you physically convulse … but rest assured, it’s a solid, no-brainer option for saving money on name brand apparel. Spending 10 or 15 minutes at your local thrift store can pay big dividends.
I spent hours thrifting for golf apparel and found countless items from brands like lululemon, Ralph Lauren and more for just a few dollars. Give them a good wash and they are good to go.
Keep in mind that many thrift items are donated for a reason. Make sure you look at the whole outfit before you buy. The last thing you want is to go home only to find a hole in your pocket that you didn’t see after the first inspection.
