Gio Reyna is hoping to play significant minutes for Borussia Dortmund this season after spending most of his time on the bench or on loan at Nottingham Forest last year. The American international shone for the club in the 2022/23 season, scoring seven goals in just 22 appearances, before falling down the depth chart.
The 21-year-old was an unused substitute in BVB’s DFB Pokal match against FC Phonix Lubeck last weekend, and could find himself in a precarious place in the squad if Nuri Sahin opts to keep the him off the pitch in Dortmund’s first game against Frankfurt on Saturday, August 24.
2. Joe Scally – Borussia Monchengladbach

Many fans they had their doubts about Scally’s ability to hang with some of the best forwards in the world, but the defender more than lived up to it.
The American made just four appearances for Monchengladbach last season but was expected to have a big year in the Bundesliga. Scally made the weekend at right-back against Erzgebirge Aue in the DFB Pokal last weekend, and is expected to start again in Gladbach’s opener against reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, on Friday 23 August.
3. Lennard Maloney – FC Heidenheim
Lennard Maloney may only have two caps for the USMNT, but the midfielder is giving the new Stars and Stripes manager, Mauricio Pochettinoplenty of reasons to give you more calls in the future. Maloney isn’t as well-known as Gio Reyna or even Joe Scally, but if he continues to perform well in Germany, he could look to break into the struggling USA midfield.
