3 Unique Ways to Gain Club Speed ​​(All From Your Home!)


Every golfer wants more club speed, so top instructor Brendon Elliott shares three unique ways to do just that with a few easy at-home drills

Most amateur gamers want as much speed as possible, treating it as the holy grail when it comes to hitting their tee shots for more space. As it swings harder can be useful, like all things in the golf swing, if not done with control, the results can be worse than before.

So instead of just grabbing the driver, biting your bottom lip and trying to swing out of your shoes, you need to figure out how to apply more head speed to it still keep everything in order.

The best part? Instead of packaging and heading to the range to hit ball after ball, Elliott says the following workouts can all be done from the comfort of your own home – so there’s no excuse not to try them.

Use these simple exercises at home for more head speed

“As a seasoned golf instructor with nearly three decades of swinging, teaching and coaching, I’ve learned a thing or two about the game—and one of those things is the importance of club ball speed,” says Elliott. “Let’s face it, who it doesn’t do you like the feeling of hitting the golf ball with a little extra juice behind it, and then watching it fly down the fairway?”

So if you’re one of the millions of golfers looking for more club speed, Elliott suggests the following at-home drills to try and achieve your goals.

1. Towel snapping exercise

Contrary to what you might imagine, this is not a workout where you roll around on a bath towel in your bathroom, so hear me out.

Take a small towel, roll it up and hold it like a golf club. In your normal stance, simulate your swing, aiming to be snap the towel at the end of your spin. This exercise promotes the feeling of increasing speed at the right moment, while also helping you to get the feeling of proper hinge and release of the wrist. Plus, it gives a satisfying “job” without having to resort to drywall repairs when you try to do this with a club in your living room.

2. Resistance band training

Most people only associate resistance bands with physical therapy or recovery, but they can be a great resource when you’re also looking for more speed in the club. They’re also really cheap and can be used anywhere from your living room or garage to a hotel room when you’re traveling.

So here’s what to do with this workout.

Secure a strap to something sturdy, like a doorknob or bedpost. Now get into your normal golf stance and pull the bar like you’re swinging a golf club. By using this drill, it will develop strength in the muscles involved in your swing, which, in turn, will increase your swing speed. But the best part? The workout is versatile enough to do between TV commercials, so there’s no excuse NO to try it.

3. Training with the speed stick

You’ve likely seen golfers or golfers hitting the practice range using one of a number of swing speed training systems – and they’re not just advertising!
