There are so many different movements in the golf swing that it is tricky to sort properly all with consistency. That’s why you and I are reading tips almost every day, and the pros are out there showing us how it’s done.
“Golfers can swing through six degrees of swing,” GOLF Top 100 Teachers says Kevin Sprecher. “They can bend (forward and backward), turn (right and left), tilt (right and left), be vertical (raise and fall), be lateral (left and right) and push (straight and away from the ball). All of these movements occur during a golf swing, unbeknownst to the golfer, because the swing takes less than three seconds to complete.
The problem is, when one of those moves gets too extreme, it can affect another move, leading to inconsistencies and frustrating hits on your scorecard.
While there is many different swing flaws that can disrupt your game, Sprecher focuses on the effect that bending toward and away from the ball has and offers three adjustments to improve. Check out his tips below.
Avoid these 3 golf swing motions
“On the backswing, if you’re too close or too far away from the ball, that ultimately affects the amount of spin you create,” says Sprecher. “The lack of body rotation in the backswing makes it difficult to generate power, shallow the shaft in the downswing and create a proper sequence of movements – resulting in poor contact.”
So here are Sprecher’s three mistakes and fixes for incorrect backswing.
Error 1: I see many golfers who lean either too far forward or too far back during the backswing because they start back with their arms instead of turning. The arms tend to travel independently of the upper body, causing erratic movement.
Fix it: Take a stretch rod and hold it along the shaft to stretch under the lead arm. Hold the bar on the lead side of the torso until the hands are outside the foot of the track. If the bar separates from the torso, you know the movement is compromised.
Error 2: Standing an inappropriate distance from the ball can cause you to lean too far forward or back.
Fix it: Use a routine before the shot to determine the correct distance from the ball. Start with both hands on the club and the clubhead behind the ball, then move uncomfortably close to the ball.
Now back up slowly and find a comfortable distance to play when you are in balance.
Error 3: Your backswing is too long, causing a backswing on the turn. Backswings that are too long can cause you to initiate the downswing with the arms and pull down with the upper body.
Fix it: Work in a more connected back motion by placing a towel cover under the lead arm. Placing an object under the lead arms limits how far the arms can travel, which creates the feeling of a connection.
Take some slow practice swings. As you get more comfortable with the length of the backstroke, now try to add speed. Slowly get up to a normal speed and try to move without anything under your arm.
