WhyI keep wondering, as my head looks up at the ceiling, and my back lies on the ground.
Why did I play golf six days in a row over vacation this summer, with some of those rounds followed by a run? Why didn’t I stop in the middle? Why at least i didn’t lie down? Why didn’t I stop when I felt *something* early on in my lower right back? Why, why, why, why?
Well, frankly, if we’re on a real fact-finding mission, it’s because I’m stupid. If you have clicked on history on these pages before, you are aware of this.
But yes, in mid-August, after the last of the aforementioned runs, I was hit with an almost electric shock feeling. Afterwards, I could barely walk. I can’t bend over. Sleep was difficult. The run was over. Golf too. Turns out, I had severely pulled a back muscle. (In full disclosure, the doctor never used the word “severe” in their diagnosis, but damn, it hurts.)
However, through pain comes joy – my tragedy works well as a guide for an article where I’m offering holiday greetings, 24 of them in all. No. 1, therefore, it is clear:
Listen to your body, friends. please But don’t be greedy.
What about me? After a wonderful detailed program of stretching and weights – most of which involved lying on the ground, as mentioned in paragraph 1 – I have recently returned to full health. Back to running. Back to golf. Oh, I felt ball no. 1 excellent, regardless of where it ended up. It didn’t matter. Without question, I’ve gained a healthy dose of perspective and appreciation through all of this.
With that, let’s continue this annual installment. There are 23 more wishes left and an obvious bonus.
2. For Scottie Scheffler, more wins and fewer run-ins with the law are the obvious choices, but let’s go with more dry humor. If you missed it, his last burst came earlier this month, at the Hero World Challenge, where he was asked by a reporter:
“I saw that Tiger joined you for a bit during the pro-am. What do you talk about when he’s there, and is it a little surreal that you’re here shooting it with Tiger Woods, especially after the season you’ve had, how you just took your career off?”
To which Scheffler replied:
“Yeah, I think most of the time we just talk about money and how the bags should be bigger. Today we really thought about the Ryder Cup and how it’s such BS that we never got paid. The tiger was really frustrated. He feels like he hasn’t made enough money in his career. I feel the same way. I feel like last year I wasn’t paid enough for what I did. That’s mostly it, just a bunch of catching up.”
(Stocking fillers: A complete recovery from his accident on Christmas Day.)
3. For Rory McIlroyanother major, finally, and it comes surprisingly at the PGA, which is being played at Quail Hollow, where McIlroy is king. (He has won four times at the Charlotte club).
4. For McIlroy and Shane Lowry, more karaoke. If desire no. 3 happens, “Finally” by Ce Ce Peniston it makes sense.
5. For the above Tiger Woodsa new Red Sun logo. You see, the current one has 15 stripes, one for each of his major wins, so yes, another win in one of the big four would require a redesign. Either that, or some semblance of a career finish line. (Stocking filler: A win at the fifth major, the PNC Championship.)
6. For Bryson DeChambeauclicks, views and subscribers. Wait, that’s on my list.
7. For Xander Schauffelea win at Augusta, but I think it comes at Oakmont.
8. For Charlie Hulla victory heater in Evian.
9. For Nelly Korda, attention on the level of Caitlin Clark, or more. Korda will mind her game. But let’s take a look at it. Let’s make her a rival too. We would like to see a Korda-Jeeno Thitikul Sunday’s back-nine battle next summer at the US Open at Erin Hills.
10. For Lydia Koanother degree. Let’s make it the Women’s PGA, which would leave her just one US Open title away from a career Grand Slam.
11. To Lexi Thompson, peace. Her words at the US Women’s Openafter she announced her retirement from full-time golf, it hit me. “I just think, especially with what’s been going on in golf lately, too, a lot of people don’t understand what we go through as a professional athlete,” Thompson said. “I’ll be the last one to say, throw me a bad party. This is the last thing I want. We are doing what we love. We are trying our best every day. You know, we’re not perfect. We are people. Words hurt. It’s hard to overcome sometimes.” Stocking stuffers: One more win.
12. For the LPGA, a commissioner with friends on TV and online streaming game. Stocking stuffer: a team event similar to the Ryder-Cup, with men and women.
13. For the Ryder Cup, a score of 13.5-13.5 on Sunday, and playing captain Keegan Bradley DIRECTORS Tyrrell Hatton 1-up on 18 at Bethpage. Stocking stuffers: Sahith Theegala wins 2 and 1 over Robert MacIntyre to bring us to this point.
14. For Ryder Cup fans, money to see wish no. 13.
15. For Tom Kimdecade (plural) more fire Presidents Cup.
16. To the PGA Tour, to Strategic Sports Group, to LIV Golf, to DP World Tour, to everyone involved in this tug of war, an end. Does this mean we should merge? Does this mean staying apart? Let’s see a solution.
17. For the new TGL league, interest after the first two weeks. Will viewers continue to tune in? Will the players continue to care as the big events begin to appear on the PGA Tour schedule?
18. For pro golf telecasts, something new. A golf style Manningcast would be gold. Think about it – two or three ex-pros as hosts discussing movies, telling stories, interviewing everyone and BS along the way. I would watch.
19. For Angel Yin, a place in this show. She was one of the best interviews ever I had this year.
20. For Willie Mack III, a PGA Tour win. I was lucky to his story this year.
21. For Tracy Phillips, a Champs tournament won. I was lucky to his story this year too.
22. For men’s categories, deserved champions. OK, so far we’ve got McIlroy winning the PGA and Schauffele winning the US Open. So let’s go with Ludwig Aberg in the Open Championship and will be your youngest wearer of the green jacket Akshay Bhatia.
23. For women, deserved champions. Here, we’ve already wished for Ko to win the PGA, and Hull Evian. So let’s go with Lauren Coughlin in Chevron, Thitikul in the US Open and Korda in the Women’s Open.
24. For my nephew, point in the 70s, if only like that Can I ask Korda? next year how to get below that the number.
Bonus! For golf lovers, as always. And forever. The ability to cut in at noon on Friday and play until the sun goes down. And eat a brat in turn. And win the Masters ticket raffle. And go on a golf trip in the fall. The good things.
