Ch. Jackson 20.44 NR, Bradford 601 PB
STATEN ISLAND (USA, February 28). A dramatic 3,000m race at the Ocean Breeze facility during the first day of the US Indoor Championships. Cole Hawker won in 7:39.25, ahead of Jared Nugus in 7:39.28, and Torun was not 0.01 behind Nico Young in 7:39.29. The women’s 3000m was simpler for Emily McKay with a record of 8:30.01 and a PB with El St Pierre 8:31.07 and Margot Appleton third in 8:41.41. Dylan Baird won the 60m hurdles final with a PB of 7.37 to tie world leader Trey Cunningham who was second in 7.40 (but 7.38 in the heats) with Jamal Britt third in 7.46.
Aaliyah Armstrong clearly won the women’s final in 7.82, surprising Dane Dyer with a PB of 7.92 as Alaysha Johnson was DQ as she ran under protest in the top two range. World shot put champion Chase Jackson was in top form at the right time, winning in 20.44 and the US indoor record. Second qualifier is Abria Smith as a surprise 19.23 PB.
In the pole vault, Zach Bradford had a new PB and MR of 601 (6th American of 6) and beat KC Lightfoot, who tied with Chris Nielsen, both 585. Nielsen then won the administrative flight for the World Indoors. Women’s high jump, no surprises, Charity Hufnagel 196 Vashti Cunningham 193 and Anna Hall 190.
Jasmine Moore won the long jump with 686, followed by Monet Nichols at 6.72, with reigning world indoor champion Claire Bryant at 669. Isaiah Harris topped the shot put in 23.41 and the 5000m walk was topped by Nick Christie in 19:13.37 NR and Lauren Harris in 22:14.69 NR.
