competition, Charlie Hoffman he says, it’s fun.
So is this for him.
“I love walking down the fairways,” he said, “and guys are like, how old are you? I’m 48. And they kind of give you a look, like, you’re 48 out here still playing ?And I consider myself, in this day and age when we’re going to have 100 players now, guys playing 48 on the PGA Tour is a thing of the past, I don’t think you’ll see that much on the PGA Tour.
“But I’ll try to fight here as long as I can.”
This week, Hoffman did, and he apparently enjoyed those stunned looks. Through three rounds on the PGA Tour’s American Express tournament, he is tied for second and the last four in the lead. Sunday at Pete Dye Stadium Coursehe will play in the final group.
But back to the questions of those players. Shouldn’t Hoffman be slowing down? There have been older winners, of course, but Father Time is undefeated. What is Hoffman’s secret?

He says he is healthier. Which in turn has made him safe.
“Three years ago, I wasn’t very healthy and I wasn’t a very good golfer,” Hoffman said. “If I—I feel good right this second. Like I say, I could wake up tomorrow morning and feel completely different. When I’m healthy, the weather’s warm, I feel like I can beat anybody in the world. When it’s cold and my back tim doesn’t feel good, I don’t think I can beat anyone in the world.
“So right now, I’m in a good place. I still like to practice, still – I like the competition more than practicing. I don’t like being away from the kids, but I’m lucky my wife and kids are here. They are actually competing in Thermal, competing themselves, doing hunter/horse jumper stuff. So they’re spending money and I’m trying to make money.”
