2024 Fall Cross-Cross Training and Racing Schedule October 23, 2024 Week 6, Day 3, Tuesday is a mountain day.

The 2024 Cross Country season is here!

Wednesday is an easy day

Most of the 560,000 high school boys and girls compete in high school in 2024.

Wednesday is about recovery.

George Young on an early Runners’ World cover

George Young was a 4-time Olympian (1960 steeplechase, heats, 1964 steeplechase-fifth, 1968 steeplechase-Olympic bronze, marathon-16th, 1972-5000m), focusing from 2 miles to the marathon. Young sets ARs at 2 miles, 3 miles was the oldest person at the time (age 34, 1972) for the 4 minute mile. In 1968, Young competed in the Olympic Games in the marathon and steeplechase. After retirement, he coached cross country and track and was the A.D. George Young loved cross country and developed into the great runner he became.

How good was George Young? In Mexico City in 1968, George was the only athlete to win a medal in the steeplechase not born at altitude. He beat then WR Kerry O’Brien of Australia. Young was tough as nails and battled 22-year-old Steve Prefontaine while he was 34 in the 5,000 meters at the 1972 Olympic Trials.

Cross Country is the real key to developing as a distance runner.

Wednesday, Week 6, Day 3, October 23, 2024

good warm up

45-65 minutes of moderate running, 6 x 150m runs,

Cool down well and remember to hydrate.

Check your shoes and make sure your training shoes

are ready for another 12-18 weeks of training. (Most boots make up a 12-16 week workout)

If not, go to a local running store and find a pair or two of good training shoes.

We will talk about that soon.

In 1971, Runner’s World did this cover by Frank Shorter and Gary Bjorklund, one of my favorite covers of all time.

Frank Shorter won 4 AAU cross country titles, was on several USA World Teams and won two Olympic medals, a gold and a silver in the marathon (1972 and 1976). Frank Shorter set ARs 2 miles inside to Marathon. He was a crossbreed.
