“I am really happy to be here in Rome. It is the second time I will play here, so I am excited. Practices were great so far. I am in good condition. I am 100 percent ready to start the tournament.

Happy to have Jannik sinner again

Alcaraz is already dreaming of playing a final against his rival Jannik Sinner. The duo, which have collectively captured each of the last five Grand Slam titles on the offer, are in the opposite half of the draw in Rome. Alcaraz says he is happy to see his friend and rival returning to Rome after serving a three-month doping suspension.

“Honestly, I’m really happy to have it again. It’s been three months. Of course it was difficult for him and I’m very sure that (felt) super tall. But yes, I think (there is no better place to get back than here at home, for him in Rome.

“Gray is great for me for tennis, for the fans to have it again, that he is able to play a tour again.”

The sinner will face Argentine Mariano Navone in the opening round, as he offers to become the first Italian to reach the final since 1978.

“We’re on the different sides of the draw,” Alcaraz said, adding: “I hope I will meet him in the final. But I just want to say I am happy to see him and his team around. I will enjoy seeing him playing again, for the people I think is great.”
