The Olympic men’s 1500m final and the Duplantis-Warholm 100m are highlights of this week’s star-studded event.
They call it the two-hour Olympics. The Zurich Weltklasse has been one of the premier grand prix events on the international tour for years. This week’s event, the penultimate Diamond League 2024, looks set to shine as bright as ever.
Men’s 1500 m – Olympic champion Cole Hawker will face minor medalists Josh Kerr and Jared Nuguse from Paris, as well as fourth-placed Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who is in his best form since last week’s Games in Poland with a stunning 3000m world record. Warholm vs. Duplantis over 100m – this unique duel sees the world record holder in the 400m hurdles against the world record holder in the pole vault. Their 100m abilities seem well matched, but who will win this friendly? We will find out on Wednesday evening at the Letzigrund stadium. More on the big head here.
The quality of the pole vault – The women’s event takes place at Central Railway Station on Wednesday (September 4), a day before the Diamond League main event featuring Olympic champion Nina Kennedy, Katie Moon, Sandi Morris, Alishan Newman and Angelica Moser. The men’s event with Mondo Duplantis, Sam Kendricks and others takes place on Thursday (September 5).
Women’s 100 m – Olympic champion Julien Alfred of St. Lucia will face Britain’s Dina Usher-Smith and Daryl Neita, as well as world champion Sha Kari Richardson of the United States.
Sprint obstacle course – The Diamond League women’s race features Olympic champion Masai Russell, plus Dane Charlton, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Sirena Samba-Mayela and Nadine Visser, further proof that the world’s best hurdlers are never afraid to race each other. The men’s race also features all the Olympic medalists, led by Grant Holloway.
Women’s high jump – Olympic champion and world record holder Jaroslava Mahuchych was one of the big stars of 2024 and she competes with Nikola Ollislagers and Eleanor Patterson among others.
Men’s shooting – The high-profile event sees the ever-consistent Ryan Kruser take on American Joe Kovacs, Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, while Britain’s Scott Lincoln is also in the line-up.
Women’s 800 m – not Keely Hodgkinson, but Mary Moraa has set a world best 600m She will face Olympic medalist Tsige Duguma and Great Britain’s Gemma Reek and Georgia Bell in a few days.
Men’s long jump – Multiple world champion Miltos Tentoglu will be the favourite, but the Greek faces a strong field that includes Italy’s Mattia Furlani, local favorite Simon Ehammer of Switzerland and Britain’s Jacob Fincham-Dukes.
Men’s 200 m – look out for Letsile Tebogo to shine as Botswana’s Olympic champion is in the form of his life as he takes on Fred Curley, Kenny Bednarek and Alexander Ogando.
There are plenty more, such as the women’s 5000m with two-time Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet of Kenya, the men’s javelin with Anderson Peters, Julian Weber and Julius Yego, while Warholm goes up against Alison dos Santos in the 400m steeplechase.
