Having a rhythm of shares that you can rely on ideal conditions is great, but you will sometimes have to make adjustments in order to approach the ball near the hole. One of the most popular of these “unortodox” shots is knackdown.
When you hit a knockdown kick, you are essentially trying to get a little bit from the yard that would normally hit. This can be useful when it is windy and you need less spin, or when you just want to hit a little more club and swing easily.
Learning to hit a knockdown kick is simple, and is something we have covered before. However, if you really want to be successful with the blow, you need to remember a main adjustment in your configuration. Knostl Explains more in the video below.
1 The main adjustment for hitting a knackdown
Knockdown’s stroke basics are simple. Move the ball back to your stay, get a little more club and then swing easily. But if you really want to turn this shot into the gun, you have to remember another configuration adjustment.
“One thing, and I learned this from Randy Smith big, it will help you in your start line – you need to open your attitude a little,” Knost says. “I will get my normal configuration, move the ball back to a couple inch and then simply open my attitude, which means moving the left foot slightly.”
When you move the ball back to your attitude, you are creating conditions for a rocking path inside-out. So by opening up your attitude just one touch, you are offsetting that path and getting the ball to start more in accordance with the target.
“By opening your attitude when you move the ball back, it will improve your starting line,” Knost says. “So many people hit big pulls when trying to hit a knockdown kick, and because your stay is very closed. Open up a little, make a normal rhythm with the back ball and you will see beautiful shots.”
