Denny McCarthy doesn’t like to get a lot of technician when he is deciding. Some experts compare it to a free shot, a player who simply reacts and fires.
The results do not lie. McCarthy was ranked 4th in strokes: setting last year and was the 4th in the blow to the round. It was ranked 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in SG: setting two years before that. It is clear that he knows what he is doing. (He is 68th in SG: this year’s setting, though that number includes only 20 total rounds.)
What is his secret? In this week’s episode of Podcast Subpar of GolfMcCarthy shared his first number 1 for amateurs.
“Select something close to aim and focus on this,” McCarthy said. “Something near, not close to the hole, something you can track closer to you and use everything it is.
“I’m not very mechanical, so I won’t throw a mechanical top,” he continued. “I will simply say visualize that bow around this place in essence, and I like to usually be closer to me than holes. Moreover easier for me to aim for something closer to me than far away. Worked really well for me, it should work well for many people, but some people do not see things like me, but I would say to use something near you.”
